The d’Alembert Roulette Strategy: Does It Work and How to Use It? We Explain

When it comes to roulette strategies, the d’Alembert roulette strategy must be 1 of the most popular and reliable betting systems you will find – often compared to the Martingale strategy, but not as aggressive, and far easier on your bankroll.

But how does the d’Alembert betting system work, and is it really that effective? We’re giving you a run-through on how to use this 100+-year-old roulette technique in this article, so keep reading to find out. And hey, you might even learn a bit of French while you’re at it, but don’t hold us to it. Oui?

What is the d’Alembert strategy?

The d’Alembert formula for roulette was named after the French mathematician and famed roulette theorist, Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d’Alembert.

Born in the 18th century, d’Alembert was 1 of many smarty-pants roulette strategists who fell for the gambler’s fallacy – the belief that if a particular outcome occurs more frequently than normal during the past, it is less likely to happen in the future, or vice versa.

The "Gambler's Fallaacy" explained in a funny cartoon.

This is, as many practiced roulette players know, false. The chances remain exactly the same, regardless of the previous outcomes. However, d’Alembert came up with a pretty neat roulette strategy based on this idea, and 1 that many roulette players swear by.

The d’Alembert roulette system is mainly used on the Even Chances (Odd/Even, Black/Red, 1-18/19-36) betting positions on a roulette table. The reason for this is that Even Chances offer the best odds of winning in roulette (almost 50/50) – especially in European Roulette vs American Roulette, as there is only 1 Zero in the European version.

Even Chances bets on a roulette table.

The idea behind the d’Alembert strategy is that there should be the same amount of black winning numbers as there are red – the same goes for odd or even and high or low numbers. As we know, this is rarely the case.

But the betting technique requires you to increase and decrease your bets after specific outcomes, and this is what makes the Dalembert roulette system work – if all goes according to plan, of course.

The D'Alembert roulette strategy explained.

Much like the Martingale strategy for playing roulette, the d’Alembert betting system requires you to increase your bet after every loss, but decrease it with every win. Let’s delve a little deeper into this roulette strategy to see how it can be applied.

How the d’Alembert formula works

The best way to apply this strategy is to play using units, for example, only using $1 chips, $5 chips, or $10 chips (no mixing values) – as long as you can increase and decrease your bet by 1 unit every round, instead of calculating it by monetary value.

The first round will see you placing 1 bet at the table minimum on any of the Even Chance betting positions. If you win in the first round, your bet stays the same (only 1 unit/chip). If you have a bet consisting of multiple units, you’ll need to decrease your bet by 1 unit after every winning spin.

If you lose, you will increase your bet by 1 unit, not double – only 1 unit of whichever denomination you’re playing with. And that’s it. You continue this method with every round using the d’Alembert roulette strategy.

Here is an example of how this may play out:

Poosible outcome for using the d'Alembert roulette strategy.

Theoretically, this could work. However, there’s no telling how long a losing streak could last, and it’s important to remember that you have to stick to the strategy in order for it to work – don’t get too greedy or you’ll fall off the wagon.

Is the d’Alembert Strategy a good choice for beginners?

Compared to most other roulette theories, yes, the d‘Alembert method is certainly a great choice for beginners. The Dalembert roulette strategy is designed to minimize losses, rather than maximize your profits as with the more aggressive Martingale strategy where you double your bet with every loss.

So if you fall into a heavy losing streak, the d’Alembert method may take longer to recover your losses, but overall, offers far less risk than the Martingale.

If you don’t have much experience in roulette, a less risky strategy is the way to go, and it will also give you more time to study the game and understand exactly how it works.
